Whether you know it or not, Network Marketing is also a relationship business. Some of you reading this already know this fact, and some of you are hearing this for the very first time. Most people think we are in the sales business - which is not the case. At the end of the day, when a prospect is looking to join your Network Marketing program, or anyone's program for that matter, first and foremost they are looking for a common connection, a bond, or something they can identify with in YOU - not your product or service.

Case in point, I get calls all the time because prospects are INTERVIEWING me and comparing me with other distributors in my company. That's the beauty of the internet. Ten years ago you could not have done this. However, because of the internet - today you can - and that is exactly what your prospects are doing. They are looking for someone they can connect with on their level, and who stands out from the crowd.

So what can you do so that you are the one who stands out, especially when you may be a typical distributor competing with the thousands, and even tens of thousands of distributors in your program? Not to mention the fact that you are also competing with EVERY other home-based business opportunity on the planet. The other issue out there is that just about every distributor has the same cookie cutter corporate web site that, for the most part, delivers the same cookie cutter (typically boring) message.

So what is the solution?

Getting back to the relationship piece, I am going t to paint a scenario for you to prove a point that will tie all this together and make complete sense for you.

Lets say you are a single male interested in finding a new person to date. You might get introduced to your potential date by a friend or co-worker. So, for the sake of argument, lets compare the dating service, where a person fills out some information online hoping to get calls from qualified individuals, to one of your prospects who fills out a form online requesting that someone contact them regarding starting a home-based business.

First, I am going to run two hypothetical, but very possible, scenarios side by side to demonstrate to you the common ground that exists between a typical conversation and date between two people, and a typical conversation that consistently takes place between a typical Network Marketer and his new prospect.

1. In Scenario Number 1, lets say we are dealing with a person named Mike and a potential date who goes by the name of Charlene.
    

2. In Scenario number 2 lets say we are dealing with a guy named Rick and his potential Date who goes by the name of Brandy

In both scenarios the two women have joined a dating service and are being contacted by a guy who also joined the same dating service looking for a potential match they can contact. Trust me, this is going to make perfect sense in a moment :-)

Read scenario number 1 first and then scenario number 2. Notice how they both parallel each other - to a certain point - and then there is a complete breakdown with one of them.

Okay, so I used those two scenarios to make a point. How do most Network Marketers approach their businesses?

Like Rick does with his dating!

The typical Network Marketer contacts the prospect (it doesn't matter if its a cold market lead, a referral from a friend, or someone they meet at some social function), they have a conversation on the phone, they send the prospect some information regarding their opportunity, they call the prospect back, and then try and close the prospect on the second call! Nine times out of ten, the prospect says no.

The Network Marketer does this several more times, ends up with similar results each time, and eventually quits the business, and blames his problems on the Network Marketing industry.

So what's the solution?
